National Disability Independence Day

As a parent of a neurodivergent adult child, I witness firsthand the unique strengths and challenges of neurodiversity. Every day, my daughter reminds me of the incredible potential that exists when we embrace our differences. In our journey, we have learned that diversity and inclusion are essential for creating a society where everyone can thrive.

Social opportunities and employment in a supportive environment are hurdles most neurodiverse individuals face daily. Witnessing these challenges in my daughter’s life has taught me the importance of acceptance and inclusion. Last year, I was fortunate to tell some inspiring athlete stories at the Special Olympics World Games Berlin for Bank of America. This was the most supportive and inclusive environment on the planet. I saw athletes defy societal expectations. Lift the weight of discrimination and prejudice that has been imposed on them. They possessed tenacity, self-advocacy, and dignity. Their stories are not just about overcoming but about becoming.

As co-founder of Red Thread, a women-owned and LGBTQ+ certified company, I have always embraced DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion). We unlock a wealth of creativity, innovation, and resilience when we foster environments where everyone is accepted and valued for who they are.

As we approach July 26th, National Disability Independence Day, let’s commit to supporting neurodiverse individuals by advocating for inclusive policies, creating accessible spaces, and promoting understanding. Together, we can build a world where every person, regardless of their neurological makeup, can reach their fullest potential.Heart constructed with puzzle pieces
